The Lord of the Rings

Multi-Volume Binding Project

This listing offers a bespoke rebinding project for J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, produced as a cohesive multi-volume set using traditional materials and hand bookbinding techniques.

• A four-volume set including LOTR and The Hobbit, bound to match and complete the series

Your selection is made via the dropdown menu. Each option is treated as a single, unified binding project, with consistent materials, dyeing, tooling, and finishing carried across the entire set.

Production for this title is likely to take place mid-late 2026.

Source Edition

The bindings shown are produced using the HarperCollins Alan Lee Illustrated editions, which include the full set of illustrations and maps associated with this edition.

In the original bindings, the maps are printed on the endpapers. As part of the rebinding process, these original endpapers are necessarily removed. To preserve the maps, I reprint them as separate pull-out sheets on parchment-style paper, which are then tipped into each volume.

This allows the maps to be retained in a durable and usable form, while enabling the books to be properly rebound using traditional methods.

Other editions may be rebound on request, subject to suitability of the text block. If you have a specific edition in mind, please get in touch before ordering to confirm compatibility.

Binding & Materials

Each volume is rebound entirely by hand in my Antique Series style, using fine Tuscan calf leather. The leather is dyed and antiqued by hand to create a worn, period-appropriate finish, with natural variation that ensures no two books are ever identical.

The front boards are blind-tooled using traditional blocking methods. This tooling is softened and deepened through the antiquing process, allowing the design to sit naturally within the aged leather rather than appearing crisp or modern.

The books are Smyth-sewn bindings, and the existing text blocks are retained. These editions already feature a gently rounded spine, which is preserved during the rebinding process. New boards are fitted and covered in leather, with raised bands formed to reflect traditional binding structure.

Spines are finished with headbands, ribbon markers, and gold-stamped leather spine labels. The original Alan Lee illustrations and pull-out maps are retained throughout the text.

Where the four-volume option is selected, additional work is required to ensure the fourth volume is dyed, finished, and tooled to match the existing set as closely as possible.

A Note on Individuality

The calf leather used will show natural markings and subtle colour variation. The hand-antiquing and tooling process ensures that each set has its own character and patina. This is intentional and part of the nature of the work.
